A linen press is a large piece of furniture developed in the 18th and 19th centuries, traditionally featuring upper cabinet doors enclosing sliding trays for storing folded household linen, paired with lower drawers for garments.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid timber frames with high-grade flame or figured mahogany veneers, often embellished with boxwood or ebony stringing, hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, and secondary woods such as oak or pine.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction characteristics including hand-beveled drawer linings, original brass hardware, un-standardised dimensions reflecting hand-tooling, and appropriate timber oxidisation and wear consistent with age.

An antique linen press serves as a focal point in a bedroom or hallway, offering substantial vertical storage while introducing rich wood tones and historical craftsmanship that contrast effectively with minimalist contemporary decor.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the timber.
