Chest of Drawers Outstanding George III Mahogany Chest on Chest C1780

18th century
Description

An outstanding and exceptionally fine George III mahogany chest on chest, dating to circa 1780, displaying the highest standards of Georgian cabinetmaking, beautifully figured flame mahogany and wonderfully elegant architectural proportions.

Constructed with a mahogany carcass, this magnificent piece demonstrates the quality, refinement and attention to detail associated with the finest English furniture of the late 18th century.

The upper section is crowned by an elegant dentil-moulded pediment, giving the chest a beautifully architectural appearance and reflecting the classical influences so admired during the Georgian period.

The drawers feature beautifully figured flame mahogany fronts, displaying a superb depth of mellow colour and wonderfully rich, naturally developed patina. Each drawer is finely finished with delicate cock-beaded edges, adding refinement and definition to the overall design.

Of particular importance is the survival of the original brass swan-neck handles, which complement the beautifully figured mahogany and contribute considerably to the chest's authenticity and period character.

The drawers are traditionally constructed with solid oak linings and finely executed hand-cut dovetail joints, demonstrating the precision, skill and craftsmanship of the original cabinetmaker.

An especially rare and desirable feature is the presence of two candle slides positioned at the midsection, a wonderful and increasingly uncommon survival. These practical slides were designed to provide convenient surfaces for candlesticks and add considerable historical interest to this exceptional piece.

The chest stands on its original bracket feet, giving it excellent proportions and a reassuring sense of solidity while preserving the elegance of its Georgian design.

A wonderful opportunity to acquire a fine Georgian chest on chest, retaining so many desirable original features and possessing the beautiful colour, patina and quality that collectors and lovers of early English furniture seek.

This George III mahogany chest on chest dates to circa 1780 in the Georgian style, constructed with a mahogany carcass, solid oak-lined drawers, and brass hardware. The exterior displays warm brown flame mahogany veneers with a natural patina, complemented by cock-beaded drawer edges, a dentil-moulded pediment, and bracket feet. The upper section contains graduated drawers arranged with three small drawers above six larger ones, alongside a pair of candle slides at the midsection. The chest measures 189 cm high, 103 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a traditional bedroom or living room, this tall storage piece houses folded clothing, linens, or personal items while providing a flat upper surface for decorative display. The traditional architectural silhouette and warm timber tones suit period interiors and English country house settings, offering substantial vertical storage without taking up excessive floor space.

A chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is a piece of case furniture consisting of two stacked chests of drawers. Originating in the eighteenth century during the Georgian period, this design maximized vertical storage space while retaining elegant proportions.

Eighteenth-century chest on chests were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring flame mahogany veneers on drawer fronts. Construction techniques typically included hand-cut dovetail joints, oak drawer linings, and cast brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic George III pieces display hand-sawn drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and natural wear patterns consistent with age. Look for period-correct brass hardware, oak secondary timber, and evidence of hand-tooling on backboards and drawer undersides.

A Georgian chest on chest serves as a focal point in modern bedrooms, dressing rooms, or hallways. Pairing dark mahogany with neutral wall tones, minimalist textiles, or subtle modern artwork creates contrast between classic craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying high-quality beeswax twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Avoid placing the piece in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent timber movement and veneer lifting.
