Antique Victorian Mahogany Bow Front Chest of Drawers with Marble Top

19th century
Description

A handsome and unusual antique Victorian mahogany bow front chest of drawers, dating from circa 1850, featuring a beautifully figured mahogany front, contrasting ebony banding and an elegant white marble top.

The chest has a generously proportioned bow front with two short drawers above three long graduated drawers, each displaying attractive flame mahogany figuring and decorative ebony borders. The drawers retain their turned wooden knobs with decorative central inlays, together with brass keyhole escutcheons.

The original character of the piece is further enhanced by its beautifully carved side supports, featuring distinctive bird-head decoration, and its attractive turned feet. The white marble top provides a striking contrast to the rich mahogany and has a gently moulded edge.

A particularly decorative and practical chest, offering generous storage whilst making an impressive statement in a bedroom, dressing room or elegant interior.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Book-matched flame mahogany veneers: cabinet work from the mid-19th century.
Hand-carved foliate side pilasters: mid-Victorian decorative detailing.
Turned mahogany knobs with mother-of-pearl centres: original hardware of the 1850s.
Softwood drawer linings and baseboards: typical internal construction for the period.
Natural wood shrinkage along the veneer joints: honest ageing over time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian mahogany bow front chest of drawers dates from circa 1850 and is finished with a white marble top. The warm brown timber displays flame mahogany figuring with contrasting ebony borders, set off by turned wooden knobs with central inlays, brass keyhole escutcheons, carved pilasters with bird-head decoration, and turned feet. The chest measures 106 cm high, 127 cm wide, and 64 cm deep, comprising two short drawers above three long graduated drawers. Today, this piece provides ample storage capacity while serving as a statement storage unit in a bedroom, dressing room, or traditional interior. The surface accommodates decorative items or toiletries, while the drawers house folded clothing, linen, or personal accessories.

A Victorian bow front chest of drawers is a storage piece from the nineteenth century featuring a convex curved front profile designed to maximise room space and visual depth.

These pieces typically feature flame mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcases, fitted with natural marble slabs, brass keyhole escutcheons, and turned wooden handles.

Authentic pieces showcase hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-planed back panels, natural wood grain variation, and genuine wear on the drawer runners and marble edges.

Position the piece as a focal point in an entryway or bedroom, balancing the dark mahogany wood and marble surface with contemporary ceramics or neutral lighting.

Clean the marble surface with a pH-neutral cleaner to prevent etching, while dusting the mahogany with a soft cloth and applying beeswax periodically to preserve the timber finish.
