This Regency period fireplace fender is formed from patinated bronze, gilt bronze, brass, and steel in a grand Regency style, finished in gold and black. The assembly incorporates two dark patinated recumbent lions with detailed manes and expressive faces, heads raised with one paw lifted from which a gilt bronze serpent is wrapped, seated upon stepped architectural plinths adorned with scrolling foliate cartouches. A central tubular rail extends between the pedestals, secured with an ornate gilt metal mount at the mid-point, above a polished brass stepped base moulding. The adjustable horizontal assembly measures 94 cm across the hearth. Ideal for a traditional drawing room fireplace, the piece guards the hearth while displaying classic nineteenth-century metalwork.

Regency fireplace fenders typically feature classical proportions, symmetry, and decorative motifs inspired by Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquities. Constructed largely from brass, bronze, and steel, they often incorporate cast metal elements such as lions, sphinxes, or paw feet.

High-end 19th-century fenders utilised heavy cast brass, polished steel rails, and bronze elements. Gilded bronze (ormolu) was frequently applied to ornate decorative mounts, contrasted against patinated metalwork or solid brass plinths.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chased details, threaded bolt constructions visible from the underside, and natural patination or wear consistent with age. Gilt surfaces show subtle variations in sheen, while patinated bronze displays depth rather than uniform dark paint.

An antique metal fender can be placed around a working or decorative fireplace hearth to frame the area. The contrast between warm brass, dark bronze, and polished steel allows it to complement both traditional period rooms and contemporary minimal spaces.

Dust gilt bronze regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel hair brush. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, polishes, or moisture, as these can strip original gilding and historic patination.
