This early 19th-century portrait miniature from the Regency period presents a young woman depicted in watercolour. The artwork is set behind glass within an oval brass bezel, surrounded by a rectangular ebonised wood frame finished in black. At the top, a decorative brass foliate hanger terminates in a circular hanging ring. The portrait subject wears an off-white bonnet framing her face. Visible details include light surface wear across the dark timber surround. Measuring H 7 cm by W 5.5 cm, the compact piece fits well on narrow wall spaces or within gallery walls in a study or living room today.

FAQs

Portrait miniatures were small, detailed likenesses produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries. They served as personal mementos for family members or lovers before the invention of commercial photography.

Miniatures from this era were typically executed in watercolour on thin vellum, card, or ivory sheets, then sealed behind glass within brass bezels and ebonised wooden frames.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct clothing details, original convex protective glass, hand-turned ebonised wood frames, and brass leaf or acorn hanging hardware attached at the top.

Position the miniature within a gallery wall of mixed artwork, display it on a bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes, or hang it in a narrow wall space to add historical interest.

Display the portrait away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to prevent pigment fading. Clean the outer glass and frame using a dry microfibre cloth without liquid cleaners.
