This early nineteenth-century Italian Neoclassical chest of drawers is constructed from warm brown walnut, fruitwood, and brass. The commode stands at 99 cm high, 128 cm wide, and 57 cm deep. It features an arrangement of two short drawers positioned above three full-width lower drawers. The exterior is decorated with intricate foliate marquetry and band inlay borders across the drawer fronts, complemented by round metal keyhole escutcheons and small circular drawer pulls. The base rests on shaped bracket feet incorporating contrasting inlay, while the rectangular top displays a central oval inlay motif. Suitable for placement in a hallway, bedroom, or living space, this practical storage piece provides surface display area and five functional drawers. The timber displays a polished finish with natural grain variations, while the hardware retains a dark, aged patina. The construction incorporates straight edge mouldings separating the drawer tiers, and the lower edge is finished with a modest apron above the feet. The piece serves as a traditional storage unit suited to period-styled interiors.

FAQs

An Italian marquetry commode is a formal chest of drawers featuring decorative wood veneers inlaid to form patterns, floral designs, or scenes, originating predominantly in 18th- and early 19th-century Italy.

Craftsmen typically used a primary carcass of pine or poplar covered with walnut, olive, or fruitwood veneers, employing contrasting light and dark woods for the intricate inlay motifs.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn veneer thickness, original wrought iron or cast metal locks, and subtle surface irregularities consistent with historical hand tools.

A marquetry commode functions well as a focal piece in a hallway, bedroom, or living area, paired with neutral walls and contemporary art to highlight its detailed woodwork.

Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting, and clean the surface using a soft dry cloth alongside microcrystalline wax.
