Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This colonial Raj Anglo-Indian king-sized four-poster bed dates from the Victorian period around 1880 and takes inspiration from English country house styles. Constructed from mahogany with a dark brown finish, the piece displays intricate workmanship throughout its timber framework. The headboard features an ornate, pierced carved crest above a row of slender turned spindles, while the footboard incorporates a lower rail with matching spiral turning and vertical spindle details. Four tall vertical posts rise with pronounced barley-twist turning from bulbous, carved bases to support a simple overhead canopy frame. Natural wood slats form the mattress support base beneath the included top quality mattress. Practical dimensions measure 218 cm high, 168 cm wide, and 213 cm long, with the headboard standing at 152 cm and the baseboard at 91 cm. Suitable for use in a spacious principal bedroom, the bed provides a striking architectural centrepiece while offering a comfortable sleeping platform for daily domestic rest. The substantial timber construction and rich dark wood tones integrate readily into traditional or eclectic interior schemes where period furniture forms the primary decorative focus.

FAQs

Originating in the Middle Ages, four-poster beds were constructed with tall posts at each corner to support upper drapery, designed to retain warmth and offer privacy in large, draughty sleeping quarters.

Historic four-poster bedsteads were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring traditional mortise and tenon joinery along with hand-turned posts.

Authenticity can be verified by examining hand-carved decorative motifs, slight irregularities in spiral turnings, period bed-bolt attachments, and natural age-related patina on the timber surfaces.

Balance the visual weight of dark mahogany by pairing the frame with crisp, neutral linen bedding, minimal wall decorations, and modern lighting to create a focused sanctuary.

Dust intricate carvings regularly using a soft horsehair brush, position the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent splitting, and apply a natural beeswax polish annually.
