This original 19th century Victorian oil painting on canvas depicts the racehorse Melton and jockey Fred Archer in a pastoral landscape setting. Painted by F S Evans in 1885, the artwork is signed and dated lower right, and housed in a ribbed gilt wood frame with protective glazing. The palette comprises warm brown tones across the horse's coat and landscape, complemented by the jockey's pale racing silks. The composition presents the horse in profile standing outdoors beneath an overcast sky with a small building visible in the distance. The framed piece measures 81 cm high, 99 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. Suitable for an English Country House interior style, this sporting painting works well displayed above the mantel in a traditional living room, study, or library. The frame displays age-related craquelure, minor surface wear, and expected frame rubbing consistent with its Victorian period. The work originates from the Stafford Ellerman estate and carries a historic Percy Young London canvas supplier stamp on the reverse. It functions as a historical piece of equestrian art commemorating a notable Derby winner and champion jockey of the nineteenth century.

English sporting art of the 19th century focuses on precise anatomical depictions of racehorses, working animals, and hunting scenes, frequently featuring jockeys in racing silks positioned within expansive rural landscapes.

These artworks were typically created using oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed inside molded wooden frames finished with hand-applied gold leaf or gilt gesso.

Authentic period paintings display natural craquelure throughout the paint layers, historic wooden stretcher bars, age-related oxidisation on the canvas reverse, and period-correct frame construction.

An equestrian oil painting operates effectively as a central statement piece mounted above a fireplace mantel, positioned over a credenza, or integrated into an eclectic gallery wall.

Maintain stable humidity levels and keep the canvas away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting the gilt frame gently with a soft dry brush while avoiding liquid cleaners on the paint surface.
