Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Hand-cut dovetails on drawer boxes: cabinet work before machine dovetailing.
Rough-sawn pine backboards nailed into rebates: standard nineteenth-century backing.
Softwood body sides stained to simulate mahogany: typical provincial Victorian practice.
Brass ring handles with rosette centres: nineteenth-century fittings showing natural tarnish.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th century Georgian style chest of drawers follows traditional proportions and offers ample storage within a compact footprint. Constructed from mahogany with flame mahogany veneers and brass hardware, the piece presents a warm brown finish across all visible surfaces. Six graduated drawers fill the front elevation, each fitted with two circular brass ring handles featuring decorative backplates. The top surface shows a simple edge moulding, while the base terminates in shaped bracket feet beneath the lowest drawer. Practical dimensions make this chest suitable for placement in a bedroom, hallway or living area to hold folded clothing or everyday items.

FAQs

A narrow mahogany chest of drawers is a tall vertical storage unit designed to minimise floor space usage while maximizing vertical storage capacity, traditional in British cabinet making since the 18th century.

Traditional chests feature solid mahogany frames, flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, dust boards between tiers, and cast brass ring or knob handles.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-saw marks on drawer linings, uneven hand-cut dovetails, secondary timbers such as pine or oak inside drawers, and natural oxidisation on backboards.

A tall mahogany chest provides balance in modern spaces when positioned against neutral walls and styled with clean-lined ceramic lamps or framed minimalist artwork.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting with a lint-free cloth, applying beeswax once or twice per year along the wood grain, and keeping the piece away from direct sunlight or radiators.
