This mid nineteenth century French Empire commode is constructed from flame mahogany veneer with a black marble slab top. The dark brown piece has three wide drawers fitted with ornate brass drop handles and central keyhole escutcheons, set above a sturdy plinth base supported by block feet. The surface displays a polished finish and natural wood grain patterns throughout. Measuring 130 cm wide by 93 cm high and 60 cm deep, the chest functions as a substantial storage unit for a bedroom, hallway or living area. It provides a broad flat surface for lamps or decorative objects while holding folded garments or household linens within its deep drawers.

Nineteenth-century French commodes from the Empire and Restauration periods are characterized by heavy rectangular forms, rich wood veneers such as flame mahogany, turned or cast brass mounts, and polished marble tops.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid oak or pine for the internal carcass, veneered with high-grade mahogany or rosewood, and fitted heavy polished marble slabs on top alongside gilt or cast brass hardware.

Look for hand-dovetailed drawer joints, original locks, irregularities in hand-sawn drawer bottoms, natural patina on wood and metal, and proper aging along the underside of the marble slab.

Position the commode as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living area, pairing its dark mahogany wood and marble top with modern artwork or clean-lined ceramic accessories.

Clean the polished marble top with pH-neutral stone cleaners and avoid acidic substances, while preserving the mahogany veneer using a high-quality beeswax polish applied along the grain.
