18th Century Engraving of Weeping Angels

18th century
Description

A fine late 18th century engraving of weeping angels.

The work depicts a central weeping angel seated upon clouds holding a quill above a large open ledger; likely 'The Recording Angel' said to write human deeds in the Book of Life. The angel above has hands clasped in prayer, and to the side, the two further angels are looking on in sorrow with small floating cherub heads emerging from the clouds to the opposite side.

The work has some age tone but presents very well overall. Housed in a later 19th century glazed giltwood frame.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Neoclassical treatment of the flowing drapery: design fashionable in late Georgian England.
Even toning across the paper: natural mellowing over more than two centuries.
Rough-sawn pine backboard behind the frame: early mounting practice predating machine-cut plywood.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This late 18th century monochrome circular engraving depicts winged angels amidst clouds, presented within a carved giltwood circular frame. The Neoclassical artwork shows a central figure seated upon clouds holding a quill above an open ledger, accompanied by surrounding weeping angels, hands clasped figures, and floating cherub heads. The composition uses shades of grey on paper, housed behind glass within a gold-coloured frame displaying decorative beaded moulding and a round tondo shape. The timber frame exhibits visible surface grain and a gilded finish, with age toning present on the paper interior. The piece measures 39.5 cm high and 39.5 cm wide with a 3 cm depth. This wall-mounted print hangs effectively in a home today above a sideboard or within a living room setting.

During the 18th century, copperplate engraving was a primary medium for reproducing detailed religious and classical compositions, often framed in circular or oval tondos popularised during the Neoclassical period.

These pieces typically consist of hand-printed ink on laid paper, housed behind glass within hand-carved timber frames finished with leaf gilding.

Authentic examples usually display visible plate marks from the metal printing plate, characteristic chain lines in handmade paper, and natural surface wear or oxidisation on the gilded frame.

A circular gilt-framed print works well as a focal point above a console table, contrasting with neutral contemporary walls or arranged in a gallery wall alongside modern monochrome artworks.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent foxing, and clean the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry brush without applying chemical liquids.
