Antoine-Denis Chaudet created the official imperial portrait bust of Napoleon I in 1804, portraying the emperor in a simplified Neoclassical Roman heroic style. This model became the standard official portrait and was widely cast in bronze and sculpted in marble throughout the nineteenth century.

These portrait busts were cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, given a chemical dark patination, and mounted onto bases constructed from marble, porphyry, or gilt bronze (ormolu) mouldings.

Authentic period castings demonstrate crisp hand-finished detail around the hair and facial features, substantial casting weight, original patina wear along high points, and precise joinery to the stone or gilt base.

A classical bronze bust serves as a strong architectural focal point when arranged on a fireplace mantelpiece, positioned within a library bookcase, or styled on an entry console table paired with contemporary art.

Dust the bronze regularly with a dry, soft-bristle brush or microfibre cloth, avoid liquid solvents or harsh abrasive polishes, and protect the original patination with an occasional application of microcrystalline wax.
