Description

Fine Austrian Cold-Painted Bronze Orientalist Sculpture Manner of Franz Bergman

Brief Description:

This is a truly incredible quality late 19th/early 20th-century Austrian cold-painted bronze Orientalist sculpture, beautifully modelled in the manner of the celebrated Viennese bronze artist Franz Bergman (1861–1936).

This charming and exceptionally detailed composition depicts a traditional Middle Eastern street merchant, wearing a colourful turban, flowing ochre-coloured robes and a beautifully draped green cloak.

The gentleman stands holding a string of beads, beside a separate miniature folding merchant's table displaying an assortment of intricately modelled wares and accessories.

The quality of the sculptural detailing is particularly appealing, from the gentleman's expressive facial features and carefully modelled hands to the natural folds of his garments and the delightful miniature objects displayed upon the table.

The original-style polychrome decoration combines warm earthy colours, rich greens and subtle contrasting tones, all enhanced by a wonderfully aged patina.

A fabulous example of the Orientalist subjects so popular among Austrian bronze manufacturers during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

This is a fine Austrian cold-painted bronze Orientalist sculpture from 1910, executed in the Vienna Bronze style. Modelled in the manner of Franz Bergman, the polychrome work is cast in bronze with cold-painted enamel decoration in warm ochre, rich green, and brown tones. The composition depicts a bearded male figure in a patterned turban and flowing robes, holding a string of beads next to a miniature folding trestle table with decorated items on top. Natural rubbing, minor paint losses, and an aged patina appear across the surface. The piece measures 18.7 cm high, 10.1 cm wide, and 10.1 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this sculpture suits a gentleman's library, study or a bookshelf display. Placed among books or collection items, the detailed casting and colourful finish add visual interest to a mantelpiece or a display cabinet.

Cold-painted bronze refers to cast bronze figures decorated with several coats of unfired oil paint or enamel, a technique popularised in Vienna during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Sculptors cast the figures using the lost-wax method before skilled artisans meticulously applied layers of polychrome paint by hand to produce a detailed and vivid surface finish.

Authentic pieces often display foundry marks, crisp chiselling detail, naturalistic modeling, and gentle surface wear where the unfired cold paint has naturally aged.

Position the sculpture on a dark wood mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk alongside leather-bound volumes and classic brass objects to add texture and historical interest.

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush while avoiding water, cleaning chemicals, or solvents that could dissolve or lift the unfired paint layers from the underlying bronze.
