London City Antiques has dated this Oyster Veneered Bachelors Chest to the 18th Century.

The magnificent top is beautifully decorated with an intricate arrangement of yew wood and laburnum oyster veneers, displaying spectacular concentric growth rings and wonderfully contrasting colours. The richly figured circular veneers are arranged within geometric borders and fine crossbanding, creating an outstanding decorative effect. The hinged top opens to reveal an inlaid chess board, a fascinating and unusual feature that adds considerably to the character and appeal of this remarkable bachelor's chest.

The chest is fitted with two short drawers above three long graduated drawers, each displaying exceptional laburnum oyster veneering with dramatic circular figuring, beautifully framed by contrasting yew wood inlay. The drawer fronts are complemented by attractive brass handles and decorative escutcheons, while the sides feature further contrasting inlay and brass carrying handles.

Particularly impressive are the finely carved female figures adorning the upper corners, beautifully executed with flowing hair, classical drapery and expressive facial features. These remarkable carved ornaments give the chest an imposing architectural quality and demonstrate the exceptional decorative craftsmanship throughout. The chest stands on shaped bracket feet, completing its elegant and well-balanced proportions.

Bachelor's chests were originally designed as compact, multifunctional pieces of furniture for gentlemen's private rooms and bedchambers, often incorporating folding or hinged tops that could be used for writing, reading or other activities. This particularly unusual example incorporates a chess board, combining practical storage with a dedicated surface for playing chess.

Oyster veneering was a highly skilled decorative technique particularly fashionable in English cabinetmaking during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Laburnum was especially prized for its richly coloured heartwood and distinctive concentric figuring, while yew wood provided beautifully contrasting golden tones. The combination of these timbers creates a truly spectacular decorative effect.

A magnificent and highly unusual antique bachelor's chest, distinguished by its remarkable yew wood and laburnum oyster veneers, beautifully carved classical figures and concealed chess board. An outstanding statement piece for a country house, period interior or contemporary setting, offering exceptional decorative appeal, historical interest and practical functionality.
