Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to European decorative art that incorporates Chinese-inspired motifs, patterns, and lacquering techniques. During the Edwardian era, cabinetmakers revived these 18th-century designs, producing painted, japanned, and lacquered bedroom furniture.

Edwardian bedsteads were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or beech, coated in layers of black lacquer or japan varnish. Decorative details were hand-painted using gold leaf or metallic paints, with iron side rails connecting the headboard and footboard.

Authentic pieces feature cast iron or steel fittings, original brass castors, and hand-applied gilded decoration showing subtle age-related wear. The lacquer often exhibits natural micro-crazing, and the construction relies on traditional joinery techniques.

Pair a black lacquered Chinoiserie bed with crisp neutral linen bedding to highlight the detailed gold brushwork. Complement the frame with understated modern nightstands or rich jewel-toned textiles to balance traditional craft with contemporary minimalism.

Dust the lacquered surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth without commercial polish or chemical solvents. Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent the lacquer finish from flaking.
