This late 19th-century French faux-bamboo semainier chest of drawers exemplifies the Chinoiserie influence on European decorative arts around 1880. Fabricated from warm honey pine and beech timber with visible grain, the vertical commode displays a rich patina, visible traces of old woodworm mostly in the faux-bamboo elements, and seven horizontal drawers framed by intricate faux-bamboo carved mouldings and turned details. Each drawer includes a central circular keyhole plate and operates with smooth movement, supported at the base by turned bun feet. Measuring 136 cm high, 89 cm wide and 42 cm deep, this tall storage piece suits a bedroom or dressing room as a practical chest of drawers for clothing and linens while adding period character to domestic spaces.

A semainier is a traditional French chest of drawers featuring seven distinct drawers, historically designed to hold a weeks worth of clothing or linens, allocating one drawer for each day.

Nineteenth-century faux bamboo furniture was typically crafted from softwoods or hardwoods such as pine, beech, or maple, which were carved, turned, and stained to imitate the natural nodes and texture of bamboo stalks.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-carved turned detailing simulating bamboo joints, hand-dovetailed drawer construction, original iron or brass lock escutcheons, and signs of natural surface wear consistent with age.

A tall semainier functions effectively as a vertical accent piece in a hallway, dressing room, or bedroom, pairing naturally with contemporary art or organic textures to balance architectural lines.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying clear natural beeswax periodically.
