This nineteenth-century Regency oil painting depicts a gentleman belonging to the Findlay family, posed in a dark coat and white neckcloth against a red draped curtain backdrop. The canvas shows a repaired rip alongside some damage and is housed within a moulded giltwood and gesso frame featuring corner scrollwork and a dark brown finish. Measuring 85 cm high, 73 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, the portrait suits placement above the mantel in a gentleman's library or study. The artwork brings traditional character to a home interior, integrating naturally into period settings. The combination of the dark subject attire and the gilded, decorated frame creates a striking visual contrast on a living room or reception wall.

FAQs

Georgian and Regency portraiture typically features sitters depicted in formal attire set against dramatic drapery, architectural columns, or landscape backdrops. These portraits were commissioned to record personal identity, status, and social standing during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Artists primarily used oil paints composed of natural pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied onto hand-stretched linen canvas or wooden panels. Frames were typically crafted from timber and decorated with moulded gesso before being finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period portraits often show natural craquelure across the paint surface, historic stretcher marks, and age-related darkening or oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas. Examining the construction of the wooden stretcher frame and the application of gesso gilding also provides clues to its era.

Position an antique portrait as a focal point above a mantelpiece, console table, or within a gallery wall mixed with contemporary art. The rich, warm tones and classic gilded frame create contrast when paired with modern minimalism or traditional dark academia aesthetics.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to prevent cracking or canvas movement. Dust the frame and surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water.
