This nineteenth century Regency oil painting on canvas depicts a gentleman wearing a dark blue double-breasted coat and a white cravat against a dark background. The artwork sits inside an ornate giltwood frame featuring elaborate foliage mouldings, corner scrollwork, and visible damage along the plaster detailing. A small repair is present on the canvas, showing natural signs of age consistent with its nineteenth century origins. The painting measures 93 cm high, 79 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. Traditional in style, the portrait fits naturally above the mantel in a living room, study, or hallway interior. The rich dark tones of the subject's coat complement classic and heritage interior schemes, bringing historic character to domestic wall spaces. The gilded frame provides a reflective focal point that enhances traditional decor settings while adding depth and texture to interior walls.

FAQs

Regency portrait painting refers to figurative fine art produced during the early nineteenth century, characteristically featuring formal attire, high cravats, and controlled lighting against neutral dark backgrounds.

Artists traditionally applied oil pigment onto stretched linen canvas, with completed works framed in hand-carved or cast plaster giltwood frames finished in gold leaf.

Authentic period works display natural craquelure patterns across the paint surface, age-appropriate discolouration of historical varnish, and hand-stretched canvas secured to original timber stretchers.

An antique portrait can be positioned as a focal point above a mantelpiece or integrated into a gallery wall alongside contrasting contemporary artwork.

Position the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiator heat, and moisture, dusting the frame and surface gently with a soft dry brush without applying chemical cleaners.
