Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Fielded pine back panels: standard workshop joinery before plywood backs appeared.
Hand-cut dovetails on the drawer sides: traditional nineteenth-century drawer construction.
Thick flame mahogany veneers: cut before thin modern rotary slicing was used.
Dark oxidisation across the unpolished interior timbers: natural darkening over many decades.
Pressed brass ring handles: hardware in the Regency revival taste.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

It serves well as a sideboard or general storage cabinet in traditional interiors.

FAQs

A chiffonier is a compact sideboard or cupboard originating in the early 19th century, designed with enclosed lower doors and upper drawers to provide versatile storage in living or dining spaces.

Victorian chiffoniers were typically built using solid pine or oak internal frames faced with premium hardwood veneers such as flame mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, and finished with brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, original brass locks or escutcheons, natural timber oxidisation on unfinished rear panels, and book-matched flame mahogany veneers.

Position the piece in an entry hallway or dining room, balancing the deep timber tones against neutral walls, contemporary artwork, or minimalist stone and ceramic accessories.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually, keeping the timber clear of damp areas, direct sunlight, and heat sources.
