Rare 18th Century Antique Painting on Tin – Moving Clock Hands and Waterwheel

Description

Rare 18th Century Antique Painting on Tin – Moving Clock Hands and Waterwheel

This is a wonderful English Georgian antique painting on tin of a lovely countryside setting. The central piece being the village church which has a clock in the tower, the hands can move by a clock movement behind the painting, the waterwheel can also move in the same way. Beautifully painted and in very good original condition, the painted pine frame hinges open to allow access inside. All very honest, the movement isn’t work at the moment. English and dating to around 1770.

This 18th-century English Georgian automaton clock picture depicts a rural landscape centred on a parish church with a clock tower dial and a waterwheel cut-out near an arched stone bridge. The composition incorporates oil paint on a tin sheet set within a dark green painted pine frame with plain mouldings, metal hanging rings at the top, and a hinged opening mechanism that provides access to the interior. Surface wear is visible along the edges of the frame. The artwork measures 43 cm in height, 61 cm in width, and 5 cm in depth. Today, this piece serves as a wall-mounted decorative object suitable for display above a sideboard in a gentleman's library or living room. The non-working mechanical movement behind the tin canvas operates the clock hands and the waterwheel mechanism. The visual elements include detailed church architecture, gravestones in a walled churchyard, figures along a path, and distant buildings under a clouded sky, reflecting traditional folk art practices of the period.

FAQs

An automaton clock painting, historically known as a tableau anime, combines a conventional painted landscape or scene with working clockwork mechanisms behind the surface. These mechanisms move elements on the dial, such as clock hands, waterwheels, or windmills, blending horology with fine art.

These works typically utilise oil pigments painted directly onto tin or canvas sheets, mounted within solid wood frames. Behind the panel, brass or iron clock movements drive the moving components embedded into the scene.

Authentic 18th-century pieces feature hand-cut gears, natural age-related craquelure or oxidisation on the painted metal surface, and period-correct square-headed fasteners securing the movement to the back of the frame.

Display the artwork as a focal piece on a neutral painted wall above a console table or mantelpiece. Pairing the mechanical picture with minimalist lighting or dark woodwork complements its historical character without cluttering the space.

Keep the artwork in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight and excess humidity to prevent corrosion of the tin substrate. Clean the surface gently using a dry soft microfibre cloth, and have the clockwork movement serviced by a professional horologist.
