Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Hand-carved solid walnut mirror crest: high-grade mid-Victorian Rococo revival work.
Dark specks along the lower mirror edge: natural ageing of early plate silvering.
Fine hairline checks across the burr walnut: slow timber shrinkage over generations.
Moulded serpentine marble top: matches the cabinet profile without later recutting.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian credenza sideboard, dating from 1850, is fashioned from warm brown burr walnut with a white serpentine marble top and glazed mirror elements. The piece stands on a serpentine shaped burr walnut plinth with carved wooden feet, featuring a large oval mirror back surrounded by intricate carved scrollwork and a pierced pediment. Below the double moulded edge of the marble top, the base contains a pair of central burr walnut oval mirror doors with carved wooden surrounds, flanked by two side doors with moulded panels. The internal space includes polished shelves. Measuring 222 cm high, 184 cm wide, and 55 cm deep with a marble top height of 90 cm, this large showcase item functions as a grand storage and display sideboard in a formal dining room, hallway, or living area.

FAQs

A Victorian mirror-back credenza is a decorative sideboard featuring a marble or timber surface, lower cupboard storage, and an ornate, glass-framed backboard designed to reflect light in nineteenth-century dining rooms.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using solid hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, often faced with decorative burr veneers and topped with hand-shaped marble slabs.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original mercurial or silvered mirror glass, complex veneering techniques on shaped fronts, and natural patination across the timber surfaces.

Position the credenza as a focal point in a hallway or dining space, pairing the rich walnut tones with neutral wall palettes and minimal modern ceramics to contrast the decorative carving.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax twice yearly, ensuring the marble top is protected from acidic spills using specialised non-abrasive stone cleaners.
