1930s Nero Lemania Chronograph Pocket Watch

1920 - 1940
Description

1930s Nero Lemania chronograph pocket watch.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement has a five digit serial number, Lemania started this numbering system in 1931. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 51mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is chromium plated and it is in good condition, just a little marking to the hinged back but nothing serious at all.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The dial is signed Lemania Nero, with both names being registered separately in 1906. The branding eventually evolved into Nero Lemania and became the company's designated label for industrial, laboratory, and military timing equipment. These high-precision instruments were famously supplied throughout the mid-to-late 20th century to institutions like the British Armed Forces and the BBC.

The dial is in good original condition with original pin-set blued steel hands. Two subsidiary dials, one for constant seconds and the other records up to 30 minutes.

The dial is also signed with the name of the original retailer, Camerer Cuss & Co of London, a renowned clock and watch making company who moved into retail with several shops in London including a famous flagship showroom in New Oxford Street.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Five-digit serial number on the movement: Lemania numbering introduced in nineteen thirty-one.
Chromium-plated hinged case: case protection technique adopted in the nineteen-thirties.
Camerer Cuss London retailer signature: active British horological firm of the inter-war era.
Blued-steel hands and classical Roman numerals: styling typical before luminous dial standards.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This open-face pocket watch dates from the 1930s Art Deco period and is formed of a chromium-plated metal case with a transparent glass lens, an onion crown, and a round ring loop at the top. The smooth silver-coloured finish shows minor marking to the hinged back. Inside, the white enamel dial displays black Roman numerals, two subsidiary dials, and blued steel hands, alongside lettering that reads Lemania Nero, London, and Camerer Cuss & Co. The timepiece measures 51 mm in diameter excluding the stem and the loop. Designed for a gentleman's library or collection, the watch functions via a stem-winding movement with a five-digit serial number protected by an inner hinged cover. The dial incorporates a constant seconds subdial and a 30-minute recording subdial. The instrument suits display on a desk, within a cabinet, or on a stand.

A chronograph pocket watch is a mechanical timepiece equipped with an additional stopwatch function, operated independently to measure elapsed time alongside standard timekeeping.

1930s pocket watches frequently featured cases made from nickel, chrome-plated base metal, or solid silver, with glass crystals protecting printed enamel or metal dials.

Authentic Lemania pocket watches feature distinct movement markings, maker signatures on the dial or movement plate, and period-correct typography along with high-quality Swiss finishing.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed on a dedicated watch stand, housed inside a glass display dome on a bookshelf, or mounted within a shadow box frame on a desk.

Mechanical pocket watches should be kept away from moisture and strong magnetic fields, wound gently until resistance is felt, and serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
