Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French provincial chest of drawers dates from around 1900 and is constructed from solid golden oak in a warm brown colour. The tall rectangular body comprises six stacked drawers set within moulded frames, complemented by brass swing drop handles, brass keyhole escutcheons, and a central green tassel hanging from the top drawer lock. Fluted pilasters flank the front corners, leading down to turned wooden feet beneath a stepped plinth base. Measuring 121 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this practical piece provides substantial vertical storage while occupying a modest floor footprint. It functions effectively in a bedroom as a tallboy for clothing, or in a hallway or landing space for linens and household accessories. The clean architectural lines and warm timber tones integrate smoothly into both traditional and classic interior settings, offering everyday storage utility combined with decorative period charm.

FAQs

A French tallboy chest, traditionally known as a semainier when featuring seven drawers or a tall commode when featuring six, is a tall storage cabinet designed with a compact horizontal footprint to maximise vertical space.

Traditional French chests are constructed from solid oak, incorporating hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, tongue-and-groove back panels, and cast brass hardware such as wreath handles and key escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces display fluted side pilasters, oak drawer linings, hand-carved mouldings, and evidence of original joinery methods alongside natural oxidisation on the timber and brassware.

A French oak chest provides natural timber warmth to modern bedrooms or hallways, pairing effectively with neutral plaster walls, contemporary lighting, and minimalist textiles.

Maintain oak furniture by applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year with a soft cloth, keeping the surface free from direct sunlight, and avoiding aggressive chemical cleaners.
