An early 20th century Japanese tansu storage chest, this piece belongs to the Meiji or Taisho period style. Constructed from richly grained keyaki zelkova wood, it displays a warm brown finish. The facade incorporates traditional blackened iron hardware, including intricate corner brackets, central locking plates with drop handles on the drawers, and a compartment door on the lower right. Small drop handles sit on the lower drawers alongside keyhole escutcheons, and the entire structure rests on integrated wooden wheels fitted to the base. Measuring 91 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 38.5 cm deep, this multi-drawer cabinet suits placement in a gentleman's library or study as a functional storage chest for documents or small items. Its compact wheeled base allows for easy repositioning against a study wall or beside a desk within a traditional or eclectic interior.

A Kuruma Tansu is a traditional Japanese mobile chest of drawers built on wooden wheels, historically used by merchants and households to easily relocate valuables during fires or emergencies.

Japanese Tansu chests were primarily crafted from native woods such as Zelkova (Keyaki), Chestnut, or Paulownia, reinforced with hand-forged iron plates, corner braces, and functional lock plates.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery, original hand-forged iron hardware displaying natural surface oxidisation, and distinct wood grain patterns characteristic of native Japanese timber.

A Tansu cabinet functions effectively as a statement piece in a hallway or living area, pairing well with modern ceramics, neutral textiles, and minimalist architectural features.

Dust the timber using a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to protect the wood finish, and keep iron hardware dry to prevent corrosion.
