Description

The camel-hair field contains small stylised motifs with 'cross' motifs appearing in the neck of the salt-bag (namakdan) symbolising protection. The dark aubergine border contains a rams-horn design with a slightly corroded dark-brown colour caused by the iron mordant. The back of the bag is woven in plain-weave technique.

In good, complete condition, this archaic namakdan was made by Baluch nomads in western Afghanistan circa 1870-1880.

A Baluch salt bag is a traditional utility container handwoven by nomadic pastoralists in Western Afghanistan and eastern Iran, historically used to store rock salt for livestock.

These bags are typically constructed using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile and foundation, often incorporating natural vegetable dyes to achieve deep brown, red, and ivory tones.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-spun wool irregularities, natural dye variations, authentic wear patterns, and traditional tribal motifs characteristic of 19th-century nomadic weaving.

These tactile pieces can be mounted as wall art, framed behind glass, or displayed on a side table to add texture, colour, and historical depth to modern living spaces.

Preserve antique textiles by keeping them out of direct sunlight, avoiding excessive moisture, and gently vacuuming with a mesh screen covering to protect fragile fibres.
