Description

An unusual Charles II period oak and walnut chest of drawers; the three graduated drawers decorated with bold geometric mouldings flanked by barley twist pilasters; having panelled ends and raised on the original turned bun feet. Stamped EB initials at the top of the pilasters.

This Carolean chest of drawers retains a wonderful colour and patination and its decoration is particularly idiosyncratic. The ornamentation of the drawer fronts seems to use every style of the period: the top drawer has a plain moulded front, the middle projects boldly and the bottom drawer has a geometric design and I love the manner in which the barley twist pilasters is picked up in the design of the middle drawer. The barley twist pilasters are beautifully crisp and the cabinet-maker has gone to the extra effort of panelling the ends of the chest. Clearly the cabinet-maker who created this chest intended it for a discerning client for display rather than merely being a piece of functional furniture.

Circa 1680

Date of Manufacture

Reindeer Antiques has dated this Charles II Oak Chest to the 17th Century.

This Charles II period chest of drawers dates from the 17th century and is made of oak and walnut with a dark brown finish. It stands 91 cm high, 110.5 cm wide and 54.5 cm deep, measuring 91 cm high, 110.5 cm wide, 54.5 cm deep overall. The piece consists of three graduated drawers decorated with bold geometric mouldings, flanked by barley-twist pilasters and raised on original turned bun feet. The top drawer has a plain moulded front, the middle projects boldly and the bottom drawer features a geometric design. Additional details include decorative brass drop handles and brass escutcheons, panelled ends and EB initials stamped at the top of the pilasters. In a contemporary home, this Carolean chest of drawers provides practical storage while serving as a statement display piece in a living room, hallway or bedroom. The dark brown timber surfaces, crisp turning and detailed mouldings suit an English Country House interior scheme.

Produced during the Restoration period in late 17th-century England, a Charles II chest of drawers typically features geometric panel moulding on drawer fronts, split-spindle ornamentation, and barley-twist columns, reflecting Continental Baroque influences.

Furniture from this era predominantly used English oak alongside walnut veneers, featuring side-hung drawer runners, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass teardrop or drop-loop handles with decorative escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display hand-hewn oak backboards, irregular drawer linings, original wooden pegged joinery, genuine surface patination around handles, and hand-cut mouldings rather than machine-milled edges.

Pair the dark wood tones and textured geometric moulding of an early oak chest against crisp neutral walls, balancing its visual weight with modern abstract artwork or minimalist ceramic vessels placed on top.

Maintain the surface finish by dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice annually, while keeping humidity levels stable and positioning away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
