FAQs

French Louis XVI style bedside tables are characterized by classical symmetry, straight geometric lines, and slender square tapered legs. They frequently incorporate delicate brass inlay or stringing, single drawers, and lower shelves, drawing aesthetic inspiration from classical Greco-Roman architecture.

Cabinetmakers during this period typically utilized dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or fruitwood, often adorned with brass or gilt-bronze mounts. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail joints, brass stringing inlays, and polished timber finishes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery inside the drawers, original brass fittings, and signs of genuine age such as uneven wood shrinkage or patina on metal components. The underside and back panels generally show hand-sawn timber marks rather than machine-cut precision.

Position the piece beside a upholstered or wooden bed frame to create balance, using the lower undertier shelf for stack books or folded linen. Pair the timber tones with understated ceramic lighting and neutral linens to highlight the detail of the brass inlay.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain once or twice a year. Avoid abrasive metal cleaners on brass stringing or mounts, as harsh chemicals can strip the natural patina and damage the surrounding wood finish.
