Florence Hess "Woodhouse Moor Feast" Watercolour

1940 - 1960
Description

Florence Hess (1891-1974) was a painter of landscapes and still life, born in Leeds. She studied at Leeds School of Art and from 1905 with the Yorkshire painter Mark Senior, whose friend and assistant she became, accompanying him on his visits to Bruges and Holland. She painted along the coast of Yorkshire and Norfolk, her earlier work showing Senior’s influence especially. Exhibited RA, NEAC, WIAC and widely in the provinces. Was a keen member of Fylingdales Group. Lived in London for some time and at Alwoodley, near Leeds.

The present painting "Woodhouse Moor Feast" is a watercolour measuring 10"x 14". It is unsigned, is inscribed on the back with title and artist's name, and is framed giving an overall size of 20"x 24". A charming historically interesting painting with lovely unfaded colour.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1950s:
Watercolour wash over graphite sketch: typical mid-twentieth-century British outdoor study.
Loose impressionistic rendering of fairground tents: typical of northern English school work.
Gentle toning across the paper: natural mellowing from decades of framed show.
Modern window mount: later framing to preserve the paper.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Florence Hess creates Woodhouse Moor Feast in 1950, capturing a British Impressionist landscape scene in watercolour on paper. The composition presents loose brushwork, atmospheric washes, fairground tents, and an urban skyline rendered in muted grey, pale blue, and earthy brown tones under a pale sky. Plumes of smoke rise from the festival grounds towards distant spires and architectural silhouettes, whilst foreground structures frame the view. The painting measures 50 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. Display this fine art piece above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway to complement an English Country House interior design scheme. The unfaded colour palette and expressive brushwork integrate easily into traditional or transitional decorative settings, bringing historic interest and a gentle narrative to household walls.

FAQs

Early 20th-century British watercolours frequently combine traditional topographical depiction with impressionistic brushwork, capturing light, atmospheric weather, and social gatherings on paper.

Artists typically used lightfast water-based pigments bound with gum arabic, applied directly to thick cotton rag paper or wood-pulp supports.

Authentic pieces exhibit translucent paint layering, natural paper age toning or foxing, handwritten inscriptions or signatures, and a lack of mechanical print dot matrixes.

Frame the painting in a sleek, minimalist frame with a broad acid-free mount to create contrast, hanging it on a gallery wall or leaning it on a console table.

Store and display watercolours away from direct sunlight behind UV-filtering glass, ensuring conservation-grade mounting and consistent indoor humidity levels.
