Cornelius Pearson was an accomplished landscape artist. Born in Boston, Lincolnshire, he moved at an early age to London where he became apprenticed to a copper-plate engraver. However, he soon devoted himself to being a watercolour painter. He lived in London throughout his career but travelled to paint in Kent, Ireland, Wales, the Lake District, Scotland, on the Thames and Devon.

He was a regular exhibitor at the Suffolk Street Galleries, and also exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New Watercolour Society and elsewhere. He was one of the oldest members of the Langham Sketching Club and was constant to the older traditions of English watercolour. Two of his drawings are in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

He often painted in collaboration with his long-standing friend T Wainewright, who supplied sheep or cattle for his landscapes.

Thomas Francis Wainewright was a prolific and popular English Victorian coastal and landscape painter. He exhibited in the major galleries of his day, mainly in Suffolk Street, but also in the Royal Academy.

Based in London, he painted in Scotland, Cornwall and Wales as well as the Southern counties. He also visited Normandy early on in his career.

He was particularly known for his landscapes with sheep or cattle and has a drawing in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian landscape watercolours emphasize naturalism, topographical accuracy, and atmospheric light, capturing British scenery using light washes and delicate brushwork.

Artists utilised natural water-soluble pigments on heavy cotton rag paper, frequently housed behind glass within multi-layered paper mounts and carved wooden frames.

Authentic pieces display natural aging of the paper, faint foxing, visible pencil underdrawings, hand signatures, and period-appropriate mounting techniques rather than modern mechanical dot matrices.

Position the framed artwork alongside contemporary minimalist furniture or group it within a curated gallery wall to contrast classical subject matter with modern surroundings.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, utilizing UV-filtering protective glass and acid-free archival mounts to prevent discolouration.
