Description

French antique (1920s) bronze sculpture of a nude female faun or satyr reclining on a circular vine covered trellis by George Omerth (1895-1925). Marble base. Signed ‘G. Omerth’ on the base with the letter ‘t’ missing. 25cm high x 16.5cm wide x 9.7cm deep, 2.3kg.

Very good condition, some marks on marble base. The light areas in the photos are due the artificial light and/or flash - there is no excessive wear on the statue.

Georges Omerth was born in 1895 in a small town in the south of France. He showed an early interest in art, and at the age of just eighteen he began studying sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1919 he exhibited his first work, a bust of his friend Maurice Bourgeois, at the Salon d’Automne. Omerth’s art was heavily influenced by the Art Deco movement, which was popular at that time. He died tragically young in 1925 (aged 30), but left behind a body of work that is considered some of the finest examples of French Art Deco sculpture. Omerth was a versatile sculptor and his work includes animalier pieces in the form of dogs and deer, French military subjects, art nouveau bronzes usually featuring women in various poses, and art deco sporting statues produced in the 1920s and 1930s depicting tennis, football and golf players.

Art Deco sculpture from the 1920s frequently features streamlined forms, dynamic movement, and a focus on the human figure, often utilizing materials like bronze and ivory.

Most antique bronze figures were produced using the lost-wax casting method, which allowed for intricate detail and high fidelity to the original artists model.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-appropriate patination, foundry marks or artist signatures, and heavy, solid construction rather than hollow modern resin reproductions.

Positioning the piece on a minimalist surface, such as a dark wood sideboard or a marble mantelpiece, creates a striking focal point that balances historic charm with modern simplicity.

Dust the sculpture gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding commercial chemical cleaners or polishes that can strip the original patina.
