Edwardian settees gained popularity during the reign of King Edward VII (19011910), reflecting a shift towards lighter, more graceful furniture styles that drew inspiration from earlier Georgian and Sheraton designs, tailored for comfortable drawing rooms and parlours.

These pieces typically utilized solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or satinwood, often enhanced with delicate marquetry, contrasting stringing, and boxwood inlay. Frames were traditionally joinery-built with upholstered drop-in or webbed seats.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery techniques, genuine hand-cut wood inlays rather than printed decals, natural patination on the timber, and traditional upholstery foundations like horsehair or coir webbing beneath the fabric.

An antique settee works effectively as a statement piece in a hallway, bedroom, or living room, juxtaposed against minimalist contemporary decor to highlight its historic craftsmanship and refined silhouette.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and maintain the finish by occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax while avoiding silicone-based polishes.
