Description

One of the best early alms dishes I have bought in all the many years I have been trading....this one came from a very good private collection....it was made in Southern Germany around the middle to late 16th century and fortunately it has never been cleaned or polished, so it has gained a very good natural colour and is beautifully decorated with an outer border of punchwork flora decoration, an inner ring of early text and in the centre is Adam & Eve in the garden of Eden, standing beneath the tree of knowledge, with Eve being tempted by the serpent coiled around the trunk....in very good original condition.

German C1550-70.

FAQs

An alms dish is a metal basin or plate traditionally used in churches to collect offerings, frequently decorated with biblical scenes such as Adam and Eve during the Renaissance period.

These items were typically made from cast brass, shaped using hand-hammering and repousse techniques, often featuring punched or embossed inscriptions and central iconographic motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate manufacturing marks, consistent metal composition showing natural age-related patination, hand-hammered irregularities, and specific stylistic engraving typical of Nuremberg workshops.

This piece can be mounted on a wall as sculptural art using a secure display bracket or placed flat on a sideboard or mantelpiece as a focal point to add historical texture.

Preserve the historical patina by avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes; dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent oxidisation.
