Description

This sparkling rug reveals the best in Caucasian rugs. Fachrolo is one of the famous 19th century Kazak types, and this piece is a great example. The dyes and graphics are simply sensational. The abrashed green field is centred by the classic Fachrolo medallion and is surrounded by numerous boxes containing archaic geometric ornaments. There is a further outer field in a lovely abrashed terracotta with more geometric ornamentation. Note the generous use of a lovely aubergine dye throughout the rug which dates it to 1870 or earlier. A subtle feature of the composition is that the field design is ostensibly in the prayer or architectural format with a niche at the bottom and top. All this action is framed by crisply drawn 'wine glass and calyx leaf' border on an ivory background. The weave is unusually fine for a rug of this type, and the pile is clipped low. It is fair to say that this piece, although of tribal inspiration, was probably woven in a workshop servicing Russian or Persian clientele. Furthermore, it has survived in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Minimal restoration. Professionally cleaned.

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Fachrolo Kazak Rug to the 1870s.

Fachrolo Kazaks are characterised by specific medallion layouts, often featuring central rectangular or octagonal motifs set against contrasting fields, originating from the Caucasus region during the 19th century.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using handspun wool for both the pile and the foundation, often employing natural vegetable dyes to achieve deep, rich hues that age with a distinctive patina.

Authenticity is identified by examining the irregular knotting density, natural dye variations, wool quality, wear patterns, and traditional tribal motifs characteristic of Caucasian weaving workshops.

An antique tribal rug can be layered over larger neutral flooring or placed as a focal point in a living space to add historical texture, warmth, and grounded geometric pattern to modern schemes.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without beater bars, professional hand-washing when necessary, and positioning away from direct sunlight to prevent natural dye fading.
