Description

A wonderful antique inlaid mahogany chest of drawers in the Georgian style. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1930’s period.

This is one of a matched pair that we have, they are identical in shape and size, with slightly different inlaid designs and handles. The price shown is for one chest.

It is of very fine quality, it is a very useful smallish size and has a beautiful design. It sits on splayed bracket feet, has lovely brass handles and gorgeous inlaid satin wood around the cross banded top and drawer fronts. The drawers all run smoothly, this has lots of storage space. The mahogany has an absolutely gorgeous colour tone and patina.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mahogany became the dominant timber for high-end cabinet making during the 18th century, prized for its strength, rich grain, and stability, which allowed craftsmen to produce refined case furniture with sophisticated proportions.

Authentic period pieces typically feature solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods like pine or oak, constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and pegged mortise and tenon joints.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-cut dovetails, irregular tool marks on the drawer linings, uniform timber shrinkage, period-correct brass hardware, and the natural oxidisation of the wood over centuries.

Pairing dark wood period furniture with neutral, textured walls and contemporary art creates a balanced aesthetic that highlights the craftsmanship of the vintage piece without overwhelming the space.

Maintain antique wooden furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
