Originating in 19th-century Britain, the chaise longueoften referred to as a fainting couchevolved as a symbol of domestic wealth and comfort, frequently used in parlours and drawing rooms.

Authentic period pieces typically feature a solid hardwood frame, such as mahogany or walnut, constructed with traditional joinery, hand-tied coil springs, and deep button-tufted upholstery.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, hand-carved details, traditional joinery methods, handmade upholstery tacks, and maker stamps or numbering often found on the underside of the wooden frame.

A period daybed works effectively as a statement piece in a study, drawing room, or large bedroom, pairing well with minimalist contemporary decor to create an eclectic contrast.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, regularly vacuuming the upholstery with a soft brush attachment, and treating the exposed timber with appropriate beeswax.
