Description

A very good example of an 18thc steel "gentleman's" snuff box....it is engraved JS and dated 1797...clearly visible, but of course well rubbed from constant use....the box is in nice condition with a very fine quality hinge and although it has lost the little button you press to open, it closes well and opens well as the opening mechanism is still in place and works.

English. C1797.

During the Georgian era, snuff taking became a widespread social habit among the gentry, leading to the production of portable containers crafted from metals, wood, and shell.

Craftsmen frequently used steel, brass, silver, tortoiseshell, and various hardwoods, often combining them with hand-engraved ornamentation.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating period-correct tool marks, natural patina, hinge construction, and genuine wear consistent with age and manual production methods.

Displaying small historical artefacts on a bookshelf, desk, or within a cabinet adds a layer of curated character and tactile history to a room.

Keep the metal away from moisture and humidity, and gently clean it with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina.
