Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Nineteenth-century English school paintings often focus on realism, portraiture, landscapes, and sporting subjects, reflecting contemporary tastes in domestic decoration and academic technique.

Authentic pieces from this era typically feature oil paint applied to woven linen or cotton canvas, stretched over traditional mortise and tenon wooden stretcher frames, often housed in gilded gesso or wood frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, inspecting the composition for period-appropriate pigments, checking for age-related craquelure, and looking at the construction of the stretcher frame and backing.

Pairing traditional oil paintings with contemporary furnishings creates a balanced interior scheme, using the dark tones of the artwork to anchor neutral wall colours or complement rich textural elements.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity and temperature levels, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning or restoration to avoid damaging the original varnish and paint layers.
