Description

This 19th Century Konagkend rug has an alluring design. The four borders manage to display traditional caucasian motifs in a creative manner, using stylised spiders and shaded diagonal bars, whilst the central field is made up of various connecting polygons and small birds. Whilst this section may be difficult to interpret, it allows for a thought-provoking response from the admirer, as they get lost in the maze-like pattern. Therefore, the use of a limited colour palette with intriguing imagery seems to work well in this rug.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Konagkend rugs originate from the Kuba region in the northeastern Caucasus mountains. Woven primarily by village weavers during the 19th and early 20th centuries, these carpets are distinguished by complex geometric repeat patterns influenced by tribal traditions and regional trade routes.

Authentic Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundation. The yarns were coloured using natural dyes derived from plants, madder root, indigo, and minerals.

Authentic Konagkend pieces feature a dense geometric lattice field pattern, precise knotting on a wool foundation, and distinct Kufic or angular borders. Variations in colour tone, known as abrash, also indicate the use of hand-dyed natural wool yarns.

Geometric Caucasian carpets complement modern interiors by introducing visual structure, rich texture, and warmth. They are frequently placed over polished timber floors alongside contemporary minimalist furniture, or integrated into traditional period settings.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid damaging the hand-knotted pile with a beater bar. Rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear, use a high-quality rug pad underneath, and clean spills immediately with cold water and neutral soap.
