A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow set of drawers traditionally featuring a hinged locking flap on one side that secures all the drawers simultaneously. Originating in the early 19th century, this design gained popularity during the Victorian era and is famously associated with the Duke of Wellington.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, turned wooden knobs, and a specialized side-locking stile secured with a functional key.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary timbers like pine or oak in non-visible areas, natural ageing, and traditional hand-applied French polish finishes rather than modern synthetic varnishes.

Due to its tall and narrow vertical profile, it fits well in compact spaces or alcoves, serving as a functional storage unit in a bedroom or a sophisticated accent piece in a study, paired with minimalist contemporary decor to highlight its antique character.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and occasionally apply a quality beeswax polish to nourish the timber and preserve the historic finish.
