Description

This is a fabulous 18th century Chest of drawers. Made from walnut with and elm top. The colour is delicious and has such a wonderful warmth to it. The patina all over is superb and the quality is very impressive. The base being walnut has great figuring and the design with reeded sides and carved feet make this extremely elegant. There are also panels of elm on the front and the sides which is a lovely touch. Deep elm lined drawers and heavy brass handles reinforce the quality of the piece. The top is elm and the patina really sets the piece apart from others. No serious faults and the drawers run well.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Eighteenth-century French commodes are characterised by their functional multi-drawer design, elegant proportions, and fine timber craftsmanship, often reflecting provincial or neoclassical aesthetic developments of the period.

Master artisans traditionally utilised native timbers such as walnut, elm, and oak for structural integrity and decorative veneer work, complemented by cast brass hardware and traditional joinery techniques like dovetailing.

Authenticity is typically verified through hand-cut dovetail joints, tool marks from period hand-planes, natural timber shrinkage, hand-forged or cast brass fittings, and the presence of genuine patina accumulated over centuries.

An antique chest of drawers serves as a functional anchor in contemporary spaces; pair it with minimalist contemporary art or modern lighting to create a balanced contrast between old and new design elements.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the timber without sealing it.
