A very nice quality 19thc brass veterinary fleam, engraved with the owners name G. Lapscomb....it still retains the original leather case....fleams were used right up to the end of the 20thc for blood letting in horses and cattle...in fact I remember seeing a vet use a fleam on a sick cow, as a young boy on my family farm and being surprised at how quickly the animal recovered....the fleam is in very good condition and a real collectors piece.

A veterinary fleam was a traditional medical instrument used by practitioners and farriers to perform bloodletting on livestock such as horses and cattle.

These instruments were commonly constructed from brass and steel blades, frequently accompanied by protective leather cases.

Authenticity is generally identified through period-appropriate hand engraving, natural brass patina, maker signatures, and traditional forging techniques.

Such pieces are often displayed within glass-topped display cases, shadow boxes, or on bookshelves alongside other curiosities.

Preservation involves maintaining a stable low-humidity environment and avoiding harsh chemical cleaning to protect the original historic patina and surface oxidisation.
