FAQs

Maritime painting encompasses artworks that focus significantly on ships, seascapes, naval battles, and coastal views, gaining immense popularity during the golden age of sail.

Traditional oil paintings typically feature woven linen or canvas stretched over wooden stretcher bars, painted with ground pigments suspended in drying oils such as linseed, and housed in hand-carved, gilded wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, inspecting the stretcher bars for age-related oxidisation and tool marks, analyzing pigment composition under magnification, and checking for makers signatures or stamps.

Pairing a historic painting with clean-walled contemporary spaces creates a striking focal point, allowing the ornate gilded frame and rich oil textures to provide a sophisticated contrast to minimalist furnishings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, keeping paintings out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and avoiding chemical cleaners when dusting the canvas and frame.
