Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, encompassing various revival movements including Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo influences, characterised by heavy proportions, dark woods, and intricate craftsmanship.

Cabinet makers predominantly utilised dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany and rosewood, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, solid secondary timbers like pine or oak for interiors, and traditional French polish finishes.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction markers such as hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut dovetails, iron or brass fixings consistent with the period, and natural ageing like shrinkage cracks and oxidisation within the timber.

Pairing heavy period wooden furniture with neutral plaster walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary textiles creates a balanced contrast that highlights the natural grain and historical character of the piece.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood splitting, and clean periodically using a soft lint-free cloth with natural beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
