Description

Colour does not get any better than this in the 19th century. Those famous Kurds of North West Persia with their eye for colour were at their peak here. What a riot, a Garden of Eden, a rainbow of gorgeous natural dyes rarely found in antique carpets. It was for rugs like this that I was first drawn into the mysterious world of carpets over 30 years ago and I still derive tremendous pleasure from it. Not many of these around and the price is historically low. Grab yourself some affordable art and just love it...!

Early 19th-century Kurdish carpets are characterised by robust tribal geometries, saturated natural vegetable dyes, and stylised floral motifs reflecting the weaving traditions of nomadic and village communities in the region.

These carpets are typically constructed with hand-spun wool foundations and pile, knotted tightly by hand using symmetrical or asymmetrical knots, and dyed with natural materials such as madder root and indigo.

Authentic pieces display natural colour variations in the wool known asabrash, hand-finished selvages, irregular dimensions due to handloom weaving, and authentic age-related wear to the wool pile.

An antique tribal rug adds texture and historic contrast to contemporary spaces, working effectively layered over natural wood flooring or neutral stone tiles to anchor minimalist furniture.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialist washing when necessary, keeping the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and using a breathable underlay.
