Description

Robert Jobling (1841-1923) was born in Newcastle and worked in the shipyards before becoming a full-time artist. As a member of the Cullercoats colony of artists and later the Staithes Group he painted North East England coastal life, its people, landscapes and seascapes. Much of Jobling's Staithes Group period work shows the influence of the American artist Winslow Homer in terms of subject matter and compositions which Jobling would have seen when they were both painting in Cullercoats. Jobling interprets this in style of his own. Jobling exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists from 1883. His life and work are featured in the Staithes Group Centenary Catalogue and his work is in good public and private collections.

"Coble off Staithes" is a watercolour measuring 7"x 9". It is signed lower right and dated 30.7.13. A good quality Staithes Group painting.

Date of Manufacture

McTague of Harrogate has dated this Robert Jobling Watercolour Painting to the 1920s.

These works typically focus on coastal scenes, fishing communities, and maritime vessels, executed with fluid washes of colour to capture atmospheric light and movement.

Artists traditionally used high-rag content watercolour paper, pigment-based watercolours mixed with gum arabic, and fine animal-hair brushes, often mounted behind protective glass.

Authenticity is assessed by examining paper ageing characteristics, watermarks, hand-mixed pigment compositions, period framing techniques, and verified artist signatures or studio provenance.

The artwork can be framed in a simple, neutral mount with a minimalist wood or gilt frame to allow the historical maritime subject matter to serve as a focal point on a gallery wall.

Watercolours should be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, maintained in stable humidity conditions, and framed using acid-free archival materials.
