Pocket watches emerged in the 16th century following the invention of the mainspring, evolving from portable clocks into personal timepieces carried primarily by men until wristwatches gained popularity in the early 20th century.

Pocket watch cases were traditionally crafted from gold, silver, brass, or base metal alloys, housing intricate mechanical movements made of steel, brass components, and jewelled bearings.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarked case metals, makers marks on the movement plate, serial numbers, and the style of the dial, hands, and mechanical escapement.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed on a desktop stand, housed within a glass cloche on a bookshelf, or stored inside a dedicated watch tray as part of a curated study display.

Preservation requires storing watches in a dry environment away from direct sunlight, avoiding moisture, and having mechanical movements professionally serviced periodically by a horologist.
