This original Regency portrait painting depicts a gentleman officer in naval attire, rendered in watercolour on paper within an oval vignette. The subject wears a high-collar blue uniform complete with gold epaulettes, elaborate white aiguillettes, and medals. Encased in a rectangular wooden frame with a brilliant gilt finish, the artwork exhibits intricate decorative mouldings along the inner border and a ribbed outer edge. At the top of the frame, a simple round metal hanging loop is attached for wall mounting. The piece measures 37 cm high by 28.5 cm wide. Suitable for display in a traditional study, a formal hallway, or a living room, this artwork brings a touch of historical character to interior spaces. It fits particularly well on narrow wall spaces or grouped alongside other antique portraits in a gallery arrangement. The muted peach tones of the background contrast with the deep blue of the uniform, creating a balanced palette that complements period and classic interiors alike. This watercolour remains well-preserved within its original glazed enclosure, offering a genuine glimpse into early nineteenth-century portraiture.

FAQs

Portraiture from the Regency era, spanning the late 18th to early 19th centuries, frequently depicted military and naval officers in formal dress uniforms. These works often utilized watercolour or gouache on paper or ivory, characterized by oval composition vignettes and attention to uniform insignia.

Watercolour portraits were executed using water-soluble pigments applied to heavy woven paper, card, or thin sheets of ivory. Frames were typically crafted from timber with moulded gesso ornamentation and finished in genuine gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural aging to the paper such as foxing or subtle toning, hand-painted brushwork under magnification, and period-correct mounting techniques. Original frames usually display cast gesso details, plaster cracks, and hand-cut glass panes.

Framed military portraits integrate well into traditional gallery walls, quiet reading corners, or home libraries alongside dark timber furniture. Grouping multiple small-scale portraits creates visual interest and historic character in alcoves or staircases.

Watercolour pigments fade when exposed to direct sunlight, so display away from strong light sources and high humidity. Frame the artwork behind UV-filtering glass using acid-free mounting materials to prevent discolouration and deterioration.
