Description

A smart and extremely well made pair of antique mahogany military campaign chest of drawers. They were made in England, they date from around the 1930’s.

The quality is excellent, they are a great size to be used as decent sized bedside chests, or as side chests / tables around the home; they are very functional. The mahogany has a lovely colour tone and patina, they have high quality brass mounts and handles. Each also has a pull out brush slide that comes out from beneath the tops.

We have had them recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. There are a few very small marks and indentations here and there beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

A military campaign chest is a form of portable furniture designed to be easily dismantled and transported by British military officers during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.

They are typically constructed from durable hardwoods such as mahogany or camphor wood, featuring flush-fitting brass handles, protective brass corner brackets, and a two-section stacking design to facilitate transit.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, recessed brass hardware secured with slot screws, maker stamps inside the drawers, and natural signs of age and wear on the timber.

A campaign chest can be incorporated into modern spaces by pairing it with minimalist decor, allowing its clean lines, dark wood tones, and polished brass details to serve as a functional statement piece.

Maintenance involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth, applying occasional high-quality beeswax to nourish the wood, and keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations.
