FAQs

The Louis Philippe style emerged in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe (1830-1848), characterised by a rejection of the overly ornate decoration of the Restoration period in favour of clean, functional lines, generous proportions, and a focus on rich wood veneers.

These commodes are typically constructed using a carcase of secondary softwoods or oak, veneered with highly figured woods such as ash, walnut, or mahogany. Traditional joinery includes hand-cut dovetails for the drawer boxes and mortise-and-tenon framing, frequently topped with a heavy slab of grey or white marble.

Authenticity is identified through construction hallmarks such as hand-cut dovetailing, the use of quarter-sawn or book-matched veneers, traditional iron or brass hardware, and hand-planed secondary interior woods. The distinctive ogee frieze drawer beneath the top marble slab is also a defining architectural feature of the era.

The clean silhouettes of the Louis Philippe style allow it to anchor contemporary spaces effectively, serving as a functional storage console in a hallway, bedroom, or living area. Pairing the rich, warm wood grain and marble top with minimalist furnishings creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Preserve the wood by maintaining stable humidity levels away from direct heat sources and treating the surface periodically with natural beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes. The marble top should be cleaned using a damp cloth with neutral soap, avoiding acidic substances like lemon or vinegar that can etch the stone.
