Karaja rugs are hand-knotted village carpets produced in the Northwest Persian region of Azerbaijan, historically known for their bold geometric medallions and durable wool construction.

These pieces typically feature hand-spun wool pile woven onto cotton foundations, coloured using natural vegetable dyes such as madder root and indigo.

Authenticity is assessed through the analysis of knot density, hand-spun wool characteristics, natural dye variations across the abrash, and traditional Northwest Persian geometric motifs.

Position the textile as a grounding focal point on neutral flooring, pairing it with clean-lined contemporary furniture to create a balanced contrast of textures and eras.

Protect the textile by using a breathable underlay, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and utilizing professional specialist cleaning methods rather than harsh chemical washing.
